  • AMERICAN LEGION

The American Legion is a not-for-profit, federally charted organization. David S. Miles Post 174 is a community service outlet that provides opportunities for social activity, and mutual support among the community veteran's and their families, with a dedication to successfully carry out selfless acts of service to community, state and nation.

The American Legion Post 174 was created in 1946-47 and named after David S. Miles, who lost his life during the sinking of the "USS Dorchester." This ship is remembered for the four Chaplains who gave up their life jackets to others and thus lost their lives as well.

Membership over the years is steadily increasing with over 370 members. A new detachment has been added: The Sons of the American Legion, which is being received with great enthusiasm. The American Legion Auxiliary is also a strong and vibrant support to our members and the community.

David S. Miles Post 174 sponsors a Boys Scout troop, local sports team, a drum and bugle corps and delegates to Boys State. They also plan the town's annual Memorial Day and Veteran's Day ceremonies as well as numerous fundraising activities and community needs.
